The best way to explore the hidden beauty of Sri Lanka

Although a compact island, Sri Lanka is incredibly diverse. Exploring on two wheels is the best way to see this rural country and to experience the way of life of the friendly people. Travel from ancient cities and the fortress at Sigiriya to the hill country towns of Kandy and Nuwara Eliya. In the south, we visit Yala National Park, where we search for leopard, before ending on the beaches of the beautiful south coast. Most of the route is a continuous ride, and transfers are kept to a minimum.

Sri Lanka is so packed with interesting sights, and traveling by bike gives you a front-row seat to explore them at your own pace. Pedal along small roads through local villages, then speed downhill onto a trail through farmland where you may have to hit the brakes for a giant lizard or mongoose! In many regions of Sri Lanka, bicycle is the most common form of transport, so travelling by bike yourself is a great way to mix with the people and gain access to their world. Ride through Sri Lanka’s lush highlands beyond Colombo down through the rainforest to the coast, visit tea plantations along your journey, and cycle stunning mountainous landscapes around Kandy with breathtaking views and fun descents. Sri Lanka offers dramatic scenery and enjoyable, challenging cycling.

Pedal between rice paddies, up into the central highlands and past ancient monuments and village people. Most cycling holidays are in small groups with a guide and vehicle support, so your bags are transported in the van and you can be, too, if you’re overheated or hill-weary. Guides pick out the quieter back roads, most of which are surfaced, and generally cycling holidays follow a point-to-point route from Sigiriya in the north-central, through the mountain areas and tea country around Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella. Then down to the coast belt covering Tangalle, Koggala, Galle, Hikkaduwa, Bentota.
